The big band sound is alive and well in Asheville, NC this week! I’ll be playing with not one, but two different big bands this week. The first gig is for the Gamble/Wilson Big Band on Thursday, April 9, 2015. We’ll be performing at the Grove House Entertainment Complex for the weekly swing dance there.
Two of the Southeast’s most famous bandleaders have joined forces to build a killer vintage swing band. Michael Gamble (The Rhythm Serenaders, Low Down Sires and The Gamblers) and Russ Wilson (The Nouveau-Passe Orchestra, The Russ Wilson Orchestra and Swingtette) have put together a 13 piece big band playing the vintage swing music of Chick Webb, Jimmie Lunceford, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Andy Kirk, Ben Pollack, Benny Goodman and many others.
And the next night, Friday April 10, 2015, the Asheville Jazz Orchestra will be performing a “Tribute to the Big Bands of the Swing Era” at the White Horse Black Mountain. We’ll be performing classic charts from the Swing Era, including standards by Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, and others. Swing dancers will get $3 off the $15 cover charge this night.
If you’re in western North Carolina this Thursday and Friday and like swing dancing (or listening) to the sounds of a big band, please come on out to hear one (or both!) of these shows. Be sure to come up and say hello to me on a set break or after the show.
